The Students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, have expressed mixed reactions following the fresh strike threatened by the Academic Staff Union of the University (ASUU).
Recall that on Monday 15 November 2021, ASUU gave the federal government three weeks ultimatum to meet their demands, or the union would be forced to embark on an indefinite strike.
The students have expressed their dismay over the issue. While some faulted the federal government as the cause of the ASUU strike; some students blamed the ASUU as the cause of the lingering strike. However, the students pleaded with both parties to reconcile and find a lasting solution to the lingering ASUU strike.
Abdullahi Aliyu, a 300-Level student of Computer science, blamed the FG as the cause of the strike. He noted that enrollment of ASUU members in IPPIS is nothing but deceit, advised the FG to prioritize education.
Unlike Aliyu, Ibrahim Abdullahi, a 300-Level student of English, called on ASUU to look for alternative ways of approaching FG instead of going on strike.
In his words: "This strike would yield nothing but negative result. It is high time ASUU considers another dimension of approaching FG than embarking on strike.
"The only way to tackle this problem is that the FG should have a round-table meeting with ASUU to meet their demands accordingly and stop making fake promises to the body.
"ASUU should find an alternative and suitable way in approaching FG other than strike," he suggested.
Another 200-Level student from the Department of Political Science, lmam Taofeeq Ahmad, pleaded to the FG to meet ASUU's demand and prioritise the educational sector.
He said: "Seriously, FG needs to do something on this annual strike by meeting up the union's demand at least their promises should have been fulfilled by now. This strike has harmed students by adding extra years to students," lmam implored.
Unlike other students, Khadija, a 400-Level student of Agriculture accused both parties of the cause of the strike. According to her, FG refuses to give ASUU what they want while ASUU doesn't consider the future of Nigerian students.
"I plead to ASUU to take things easy this time because our economy is currently going through a recession," she besought.
