IESU UDUS Holds Freshers Orientation, Health Sensitization Program

Ilorin Emirate Students' Union (IESU), Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) chapter, has held her annual orientation and foremost health sensitization program for the newly admitted students. The program was held on Sunday 28 November 2021 at the A10 lecture hall.

The orientation program was organized to enlighten the newly admitted students on the rules and regulations guiding the students on campus and to educate them on their health.

While speaking with the Welfare Director 1 of the union, Comrade Abdulkabir Aromaradu noted that the program was organized to orientate the new students and to uplift the union (IESU) to a greater height.

"The first health sensitization program was to create awareness for students on health and the necessary precaution to follow to avoid abnormal health conditions," he added.

Gobir Habeeb Bolaji, a 500-Level student of Law enlightened the new students on 'academic burnout' and the way out for better performance in academics on campus.
"Look beyond the class, discover yourself, follow the lecturer's protocol and engage in extracurricular
activities that would help your academic performance," he advised.

A lecturer of the Pharmaceutical science department, Professor Abdulrasaq Atata, urged the students of the university to abide by the rules and regulations of the university.

"Don't engage in examination malpractice, cultism, stealing, bribery, and all other forms of immoral deeds," he admonished.

He, however, encouraged the students to be prayerful and make their academics their foremost priority.

A.O Abdulkareem (Orthodox), a 400-Level student of the Radiography department, educated the students on the theme “Hypertension, a silent killer".

He said: "Hypertension is a complicated disease in the sense that it doesn't give signs before it distorts the health and it can cause frequent early morning headaches, blood from nostrils, and irregular heartbeats.

He, however, warned the public to abstain from self-medication whenever they observed any of the aforesaid symptoms, noting that every single drug has potential poison.

However, Dr. Ibrahim Issa, a lecturer from Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH), and vice president of Ilorin Emirates Descendant Progressive Union (IEDPU), Sokoto chapter, discussed the topic “Sanitation and health guidelines".

"For you to be healthy, you have to be hygienic, keep your environment clean, and be cautious of what to eat because prevention is better than cure," he asserted.

He added, "T-SHIP payment insured students for any treatment, so if you are sick, always go to the clinic for a medical check-up."

In an interview with one of the delegates that facilitated medical test in the program, Mr. Abdulgafar Habeebullahi Abolaji, a 300-Level student of Human Medicine), advised the union (IESU), and Kwara Medical Student Association (KWAMSA), UDUS chapter, to conduct a medical test on blood pressure and malaria for the indigenous students," he urged.

"Students should stay away from stimulants and caffeine because they can cause high blood pressure," he advised.

At the end of the program, the students were given mosquito nets to prevent them from contracting malaria disease.
