Emeka, …
“Hello, who is speaking?” you asked.
The lady did not have to rub the fact that she was right in your face - you couldn’t deny that curiosity got the better of you.
“Wow! I can’t believe you have forgotten about me so soon. How long ago did we part ways?” the cheery pitch of the voice fell.
‘Part?’ you wondered.
‘Grace,’ you thought.
“Grace. Is that you?” you asked, wishing from the depth of your heart that she’d say ‘yes’.
“Is my voice so different on phone that I have to introduce myself again?” the voice shot back, melting your excitement - you sensed irritation in the reply.
“Ouch!” you exclaimed.
“Just kidding, Aquaman. Who else would it be if not me?” she burst into laughter at her drama.
You were so excited that you found no words.
“I can’t thank you enough for your help today, Nnaemeka. I really appreciate it,” she continued.
“Wow! You got me there,” you heaved.
“Really?” she asked amidst giggles.
“Ndo, Aquaman. I just wanted to say thank you,” she confessed.
“God! I thought you were angry at me, and that was why you didn’t give me your number,”
“Haba! No now. What would I be angry for? I said you didn’t need it because you already had the number on your person,” she clarified.
“When did you put the paper in my pocket? How were you so sure I was going to call?” you rolled out the questions on your mind, and she burst into laughter.
“I slipped the paper into your pocket as I came out of the bank, amidst telling you I don’t take malt,”
“Interesting. I can’t believe I got so carried away,”
“You were too shocked to notice,” Grace joked.
“Seriously! Does that mean you only said that to distract me?”
“No. I really do not take malted drinks. Plus, I don’t tell lies,”
“Only you nah case study and scenario question put together,” you burst into laughter.
“Why were you so sure I was going to fail the dare?”
“Wild guess, you seem too inquisitive to pass. Regardless, I took Folake’s number as a backup plan. If you did not call, I would have gotten your number from her and phoned you instead,” she explained.
“Solksjaer needs a master strategist like you to support him with his job at United,” you joked.
“I’ll pass. It’s Chelsea or nowhere,” she retorted.
“You are a true blue babe. I support Chelsea too,” you declared.
“Then why the comparison with Manchester United?” she queried.
“I did not take you for the football type. I thought you were just going to say thanks for the compliment and that‘ll be all,” you burst into laughter.
“Maybe I even know more of sports than you,” she suggested, laughing.
“But looking critically, OGS really needs a miracle to keep his job at United. With the OleOut saga, they will kick him out soon. What do you think?”
“I couldn’t agree more, but who cares?”
