The Informant247's corrected conclusion

Recall that Pen Press published a report titled “FACT-CHECK: Is UDUSOK among the Top Five Universities Verified by Facebook as Claimed in Viral Reports?” on the eve of Friday, February 11 2022.

In the report, Pen Press had appraised the accuracy of findings made and conclusions reached by a reporter, Abdulwasiu Olokooba, who wrote a report, titled “Fact-Check: Is UDUSOK the third Nigerian University verified by Facebook?” for The News Digest Press and The Informant247.

Olokooba’s report discredited a widespread opinion that the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, is the third Nigerian university verified by Facebook. The report also concluded that the university is among the top-five Nigerian universities to be verified by Facebook.

The News Digest Press discredited conclusion

It concluded thus;

“Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUSOK) is not the third Nigerian university verified by Facebook as claimed based on the findings.

“Meanwhile, from the facts and information available as at the time of filing this report, it would be correct to say that UDUSOK is among the top-five Nigerian universities to be verified by Facebook.”

However, Pen Press pointed out that the report is misleading and misinforming, insisting that the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, is not among the top-five Nigerian universities to be verified by Facebook.

The Informant247's inaccurate conclusion

Pen Press passed a verdict as follows;

“The Fact-Check written by Olokooba Abdulwasiu and published by The News Digest Press and Informant247 is both misleading and misinformed.

“There was a minimum of six Nigerian universities with verified Facebook handles as at the time UDUSOK announced its Facebook verification.

“Therefore, it is not among the top-five Nigerian universities to be verified by Facebook.”

The News Digest Press corrected conclusion 

Sequel to the publication, Pen Press confirmed that both The News Digest press and The Informant247 deleted the second paragraph of their respective conclusions, which had previously asserted that the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, is among the top-five Nigerian universities to be verified by Facebook.

The corrected conclusions read;

“Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUSOK) is not the third Nigerian university verified by Facebook as claimed based on the findings.”
