The School of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto has on Wednesday, 27th of March 2019 inducted Eighty Four (84) graduates of Medical Laboratory Sciences, consisting of fifty nine(59) males and twenty five (25) females.
Six (6) out of the inductees bagged first class honour, sixty six (66) graduated with second class upper and the remaining twelve (12) graduated with second class lower
The 11th induction/swear in ceremony which took place at the University auditorium was graced by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor A.G Yahaya; Provost College of Health Science, Professor S.O Bello; CEO Medical Laboratory Science of Nigeria who was represented by Prof James Daniel among other Monarchs
The chairman of the occasion, Professor Jaafar Makau Laura while giving the welcome address expressed his heartfelt congratulation to the graduands for making it to such a tremendous academic feat
He advised the graduands to shun any practices that are inimical to the code of ethics of their profession
"Remember that academics are generally held in high esteem, and therefore you should be wary of anything that will tarnish your image especially in your profession and in public at large" he advised
He further implored the graduands to abide by the oath which would be administered on them and also advised them live by the dictate of their religious precepts in the course of their practice
The Provost, College of Health Sciences in his opening remark described Usmanu Danfodiyo University as the first University in Northern Nigeria to start awarding the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences and also as one of the best Universities in Africa in term Of structure, equipment and academic conduct.
The representative of Medical Laboratory Sciences Council, Professor James Daniel while administering the oath on the graduands commended the long time effort of the University management in expanding the erudition of Medical Laboratory Sciences and reiterated the commitment of the council in supporting the University and other forward-looking Universities of its kind.
He, however advised the institution to remunerate the six first class graduates of the faculty and noted that the council has done her possible best to give them stipend from her pocket
"I would advise the University management to consider the six graduands concerned as they would surely be an asset to the University.
"The management of MLSN has as usual raised some stipends as a reward for those in that category and their respective bank accounts have been credited" he said
He finally advised the graduands to be cognizance of the oath being administered on them by maintaining a good conduct and advised them to shun any practices that contravene their profession ethics
"As you leave Usmanu Danfodiyo University ,let me remind you to take along with you, the sense of discipline, self reliance and enterprise inculcated in you "
"All forms of professional misconducts are inimical to your growth and success in your profession in addition to their capacity to bring our noble profession to disrepute"he added
He however presented the licence of profession and ratified them as qualified and accreditated graduates in the field.
The commsioner for health Sokoto State, Dr. Mohammed Ali Inname while addressing the gathering reiterated the commitment of Sokoto State Government in ensuring that all the indigines who graduated are employed by the State Civil Service Commission on their respective entry points ,where Medical Laboratory Scientists are placed at entry point of grade 10
He finally, urged the MLSN to acceeditate more medical laboratories in Sokoto state, "The State Government is soliciting for accreditation of at least (2) or medical Laboratories so as to commence internship training and National Service" he noted
In the closing remark, the Vice-chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice-chancellor Academics, Professor.A.G Yahaya expressed the appreciation of the University management to the invited guests and advised the graduands to shun any practice that can soil the image of the University.
In an interview with the class representative of the department, Hon.Abdulkarim Gana, on behalf his course mates, he expressed his appreciation to their lecturers and parents for their immense support through out their sojourn in pursuing the feat
One of the parents, Mallam Muhammad Ahmed applauded the University management and lecturers for nurturing their children to be medical elites in the society,
"I'm really happy to be here today, to witness the induction of my child.
I thank the University of management for building up our children in medical profession.
We are happy that the money we spent on them doesn't waste" he said
