OPEN LETTER TO THE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT ON THE URGENT NEED TO ESTABLISH MORE DEPARTMENTS IN UDUS.

Muhammad Adeyemi writes

In March 2016, during the last convocation ceremony of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, the four state government namely Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara reinstated their commitment to develop and widen the scope of learning in Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto by establishing the long-awaiting Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Design by donating 100 million naira each, summing to 400 million naira. The news of Joy broke in the University and everyone was leaving the convocation arena with heart full of happiness.

The University management, being always ready to take the University  forward, built the Run off building for Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Design(FEED) behind the Faculty of Science. Also, is the construction of the permanent building of the Faculty, which is 90% done  today in alignment with the promise made that, it (FEED permanent building) will be completed before the next Convocation and the visitation of the concerned state governments for official commissioning.

Now, if not for the current ASUU strike, the 35th, 36th and 37th combined convocation ceremony which was earlier scheduled to hold on December 10-15 would have been a memory for the commissioning of the project but was postponed (indefinitely) by the  University management.

Furthermore, by imploring the  management of the University to seek and solicit for the establishment of some unavailable Departments in our great University from the Visitors and the respected state governments which are catchment states of the University will be of great achievement to the University.

I'm fully aware  of the accreditation issues being faced by the management from the National University Commission(NUC) and other professional regulatory councils and I must give kudos to the management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto for ensuring that all the courses being offered by the University are 94% accredited. Even what some leading Universities in the country couldn't afford. These leading varsities cannot boast of this feat and also most of them suffer from the setback of disacquaintance of courses by the Governing Body, which the prestigious UDUS is free from.

The list of the Departments are; the Department of Mass Communication and  Criminology department:
In other to boost the morale of Journalism in which the students of this University have developed passion for, the university management should make the aforementioned department alive, to encourage the act and art of News reporting and Fact checking in the environment.

Also is, the need for the establishment of Department of Banking and Finance, Department of Marketing and Department of Transport Management all to be attached to the existing Faculty of Management Sciences.

Furthermore, it's paramount that the University management establish the Department of Physiotherapy also known as Medical Rehabilitation and Dentistry at the College of Health Sciences.

Also, there is need for the creation of Chemical Engineering Department, Department of Petroleum/Gas Engineering, the Department of Architecture, the Department of Quantity and Survey and the Department of Computer Engineering and Cybersecurity studies which will complement the existing Computer Science unit. An existent unit in the Department of Mathematics.

More importantly is the urgent need for the establishment of the Department of Library and Information Sciences which is likely be an added advantage for the central library, Abdullahi Fodiyo Library (one of the best Library in West Africa) to transform her administrative duty into academia.

Finally, I want to appeal to the management on the need to establish various Research Centers in UDUS such as the center for Nanotechnology, Biotechnology etc with the existing centres of Islamic studies and Sokoto Energy Research.

I hope to see these Departments in operation in the next few years. God bless Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto
