THE SCOURGE OF RESULTS' DELAY IN UDUS.

A feature was published recently on our platform, concerning the delay in the release of  2017/18 examination results in some faculties in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. The article showcased an interview with different students in the affected departments, which depicts the dismay, grievances and eagerness of students to see their results, especially the first-semester results.

A cursory look at the outcry of graduates every year over the delay in  the release of their final results which contributes to the deceleration of their mobilization for service shows that, it is a recurring problem that students need to wait for at least  six months before being mobilized in Usmanu Danfodiyo University.

Recently, some oil and gas companies have made their scholarship application portal open to all undergraduates in Nigeria.
In a situation whereby virtually all the students are yet to see the outcomes of all their first-semester examination, is there any possibility that the second semester results would be released, and the students would know their CGPA before the closure of this opportunity desk?

Despite the lamentation of students over this problem, the problem has not been solved or improved. Instead, it has worsened over time. In the 2016/17 academic session, the results of the GST courses for the first semester were not released until few weeks to the second semester examination while the results of some departments were not released until few weeks after the vacation. Although there were few constraints that session that could be proffered to be the causes of the problem. It still cannot be justified as the same scenario was repeated if not worse, in the 2017/2018 academic session. The additional semester vacation has been over a month and there has been no trace of the release of the alternate semester results, and some first-semester  results are ought to  be released. The question here is that, should we blame the university management or the lecturers for this? The answer is not farfetched. A few departments are, however, exonerated from this problem: Departments of Arabic, Islamic Studies, Chemistry and some departments in Management and Social Sciences and some in the Faculty of Education, to mention a few among the few.

We understand that the University management is trying immensely to commensurate its academic standard with that of other universities, but this problem has been tormenting the students for a very long time and therefore, calls for adequate attention from the authorities.
The adoption of the CBT by the University is an improvement to behold, which is very much appreciated by the students as it will go a long way to curb this malady if it is properly managed.
If 100level students are allowed to take their exams with the CBT, and a few courses in the 200level are also done that way, it will reduce the marking burden on the lecturers and will surely improve the speed at which results are released.

Finally, there should be a strict deadline for the results released in every faculty. This will help in the prompt release of results. This will also go a long way in helping students, as they will be able to know their weak points and prepare better for their next examinations.
