THE RECURRING FACE-OFF BETWEEN ASUU AND FG

By: Lawal Sophiyyat

Like a rock in the middle of a lake, forever cooled by flowing water, I do know and cannot deny the sun's hotness that burns and dries up the open land. My pen has been forced to strike and rise up in a solid phalanx to the  lamentation  of students against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

In a countless wandering, seeking  peace and finding none, the strike which has been pronounced 'indefinite' seems not to be one that could be given a 'fast and gentile' healing medics since the parties involved are not yet done with their childish hide and seek game; defiling the raucous lamentations of students.

The future is bleak and visibly not happy. Academic calendars are in coma, students morale weakened, all in the name of a fight for a better future for Nigeria Undergraduates. However, my pen remained drown in the muddy water of scepticism, with terrace of questions waiting for a quick salvation - Is ASUU really an association that fight for student's welfare? Or is ASUU a bunch of academicians laying siege for a share of the national cake? We appreciate your efforts as you want to bring out the best in us by making demands to  develop our  Universities, but this is stalking our studies.

New Students are not excluded- the brunts of an age-long malice crippled their rising euphoria as they have to travel to schools that offer them admission to start registrations with no inks to accompany their books into the bully world of husbands; a cold war that could murder the already sprouted hopes and Morales.

As the adage says "Beheading is not the solution to headache". Come to think of it, ASUU has adopted industrial action since the 80s to lure the FG to their breast, but most time it has been proven to be futile. Education is the key to success. Our future is at stake with the method being  used by ASUU.

It is crystal clear that ASUU demands funding of Nigerian Public Universities some years back with the aim of ameliorating the working efficiency of the Universities which FG agreed to. So what is wrong with the agreement? Has it been cremated? Promise is a debt and debt has to be paid. It's their right! It is our right!

In addition, "The future of every nation lies in  the hands of the youths  " . Now tell me, Which hands?, The hands that are  in bondage? ASUU demands are valid and I urge the Federal Government  to grant their demands . Hear our pleas (Undergraduates). Time is precious. Yes! We believe Rome was not built in a day, the bricks were laid days paving ways for weeks, then why not adopt this and grant their  demand gradually. Our future is at risk.

All in all, ASUU should bargain with the Federal Government a certain amount that must be given to them yearly to clear the debt which must not affect their due. And the Federal Government to endeavour to include the debt in their yearly budget.
