The Mental Health KAFE (MHKAFE), the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), and the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN) have selected five journalists of PEN PRESS, the foremost and prominent press outfit in Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) to participate in their mental health reporting workshop.
The five selected journalists of PEN PRESS UDUS are: Hamid Fatimah Omotayo, Managing Editor; Abdulrasheed Akere, Editor; Mohammed Taoheed, News Editor; Yusuf Abdulbasit Hozaifah, Sports Editor; and Imamshafi Lukman, Reporter.
Prior to the selection, they [applicants] applied for the virtual workshop online and received acceptance mails on July 28. The workshop is slated to be held on Monday, August 07, 2023 between 9am and 5pm.
Their congratulatory message reads in part: “We are thrilled to have you join passionate media professionals across the country who are eager to expand their knowledge and skills in mental health reporting in Nigeria. This workshop will be interactive, engaging, and promises to be a transformative experience. We expect you will be an active participant at this workshop and use the knowledge and skills gained for mental health promotion in Nigeria.
“It will include a range of topics on mental health reporting in Nigeria and the launch of the Mental Health Reporting Toolkit. This workshop will contribute to your personal and professional growth, equipping you with valuable insights and practical strategies for reporting on mental health topics in Nigeria.Your role in driving positive change.”
While speaking with this reporter, Abdulrasheed Akere expressed gladness and happiness for being selected for the opportunity.
“I am earnestly looking forward to learning about mental health reporting from the workshop. It will really be of help to my journalistic pursuit,” Akere said.
Another selected applicant, Hamid Fatimah (Pen Babe) feels very delighted with the selection.
“Being the only female selected from my organization shows that what a man can do, a woman can do better,” she said happily.
In his own expression, Abdulbasit Hozaifah said that he felt happy and overwhelmed.
“I really hope to develop myself more after the training. I am trailing with passion and I know it pays.”
