UDUS Poetry Club Set to Hold Poetry Workshop, Invites Students

YUSUF Abdulbasit Hozaifah reports,

The Poetry club of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, under the leadership of Abdulbasit Hussein, is set to hold her poetry workshop, themed the "THE ART OF POETRY" on January 7, at the A40 class of the Faculty of Art and Islamic studies.

The club unveiled the upcoming event through a flyer released on the club's WhatsApp group  on Thursday, December 29, 2022.

The Editor-in-chief of the Club, Kayode Ayobami, told Pen Press that the club sees the need to improve its members' knowledge of page and spoken word poetry.

In his words, "That's the purpose of the workshop, which is not restricted to the members of the club alone, but also to every art and poetry enthusiast."

"The spoken words poetry session will be facilitated by an award winning post, King Skot, where he's going to tutor the participants of the workshop on the art of spoken word poetry and stage management," he continued.

He also highlighted that there will be a page poetry session, which will be handled by Michael Immosan and Zainab Bobi, two fast rising poets who have been published both internationally and locally.

"They're going to tutor the participants on the art of page poetry and publications. And with just 1000 naira, one will have access to the knowledge these facilitators are bringing to the workshop," he explained.

Abdulbasit Hussein, the President of the club, expressed confidence that the workshop will expose members and the university community to the art of poetry, how to commercialize it as a craft and take advantage of the opportunities it presents.

"Given that the university community has many fine young voices that are trending in Nigerian literary spaces, it makes a lot of sense to say we are having this kind of a thing," the president noted.

The president believes that, aside from the certificates the club will issue to attendees, the workshop will provide attendees with a network of poets, with whom they can interact and exchange ideas.
