The National Association of Campus Journalists, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) chapter has unveiled the Nigeria Health Watch as a partner for its upcoming symposium.
PEN Press gathered this information from an NACJ, UDUS flyer announcing the African Solutions Journalism beacon as a partner for its symposium which will take place on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the University Auditorium, UDUS Permanent site.
Nigeria Health Watch is a not-for-profit health communication and advocacy organisation that seeks to advocate for better health for Nigerians. They have worked to actively engage and support the government in raising awareness and increasing knowledge on a wide range of health issues in Nigeria.
According to their official website, the unique capacity of the Nigeria Health Watch "lies in the combination of its communication and health expertise, which enables the organisation to provide solutions for evidence-based communications and advocacy in the health sector," and likewise several other sectors.
The organisation has championed the mainstreaming of Solutions Journalism in the Nigerian and African media space through its partnership with the Solutions Journalism Network to birth the Solutions Journalism Africa Initiative (SJAI).
Many Danfodites have benefited from the Nigeria Health Watch's Solutions Journalism drive and, in the words of the NACJ-UDUS president, Abiodun Jamiu, their partnership with the NACJ-UDUS promises great prospects for journalism and journalists in the university.
In the words of the president, "We’re really excited about the prospect that comes with the partnership. We’re not only addressing fundamental issues, but also sowing the seed of solutions journalism on campus. The partnership also comes with an award for the best solutions story done by our students. This, I believe strongly, coupled with the training on solutions journalism that we’d be organising, will help to spur interest in solutions stories on campus."
The symposium, themed "Tertiary Education in Nigeria: Reflections", will deftly explore the past, currency and future of the Nigerian tertiary education system with a view to provide viable solutions to the teeming challenges that undermine its sustainability.
