Greenline Nurture Initiative (GNI) is an academic platform founded by two lecturers at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, namely Prof. Jimoh Olaiya Amzat, a lecturer at the Sociology Department, Faculty of Social Sciences and Dr. Kazeem Aremu, a lecturer at the Department of Mathematics.
The platform is aimed at grooming and nurturing young people aspiring for greater heights, to maximise their potentials and make a bright future for themselves.
According to the founders, the initiative (GNI) has a special interest in academic excellence, as it scouts out young persons who strive for academic excellence, and mentors them on how to navigate higher academic ventures.
"GNI achieves these through various media: a mentorship cohort for undergraduate students, awards of recognition for young people making academic exploits, webinars, workshops, trainings and much more," its Facebook page reads.
In an interview with PEN PRESS UDUS, the Public Relations Officer and Content Writer of GNI, Uchenna Emelife, a 400 level student of Literature-in-English at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, also emphasized on the vision of the initiative.
"Its vision is to build a society where academic excellence is given the due priority and restore faith in it," he said.
While speaking with a co-founder of Greenline Nurture Initiative, Dr Kazeem Aremu, he said that GNI was born out of the desire to see young people maximize their potentials.
"You will agree with me that the rate at which unharnessed talents and potentials are left in peril is quite alarming," he stated.
Dr Kazeem lamented that the multiplier effect of the wastage of potentials is huge.
"Therefore GNI is born to curb this gross human capital wastage in our own capacity," he said.
About GNI Academic Mentorship Cohort
GNI Academic Mentorship Cohort is a free 6-month mentorship program organised by Greenline Nurture Initiative for 50 outstanding undergraduate finalists in Sokoto.
The application deadline which was before, stipulated for 28th November, 2021 has now been extended to Sunday 5th December, 2021 for more persons to apply.
Uchenna said that since the platform is meant for grooming and nurturing young minds aspiring for greater heights, the cohort would offer intensive training on processes and procedures of securing international scholarships/fellowships.
"At GNI, we do not agree that 'school is scam', we advocate for a more academic-focused youth and through our programs, we show how young people can maximise academic excellence to their benefits," he added.
He therefore, listed the eligibility and requirements for the application of the program which its duration is between December, 2021 and May, 2022.
"1. The applicant must be a final year undergraduate student in a degree awarding institution in Sokoto.
"2. The applicant must have at least CGPA of 4.0/5.0 or its equivalent in the last academic session.
"3. The applicant must write an essay of not more than 250 words stating their passion for academic excellence, zeal for a postgraduate studies and why GNI board should select them as part of cohort 1.

Benefits of GNI Academic Mentorship Cohort
When PEN PRESS asked Dr Kazeem about what privileged students would benefit from the program, he said that, at the end of GNI academic mentorship cohort 1, it is expected that all the applicants would be inspired to achieve greatness through their individual intellectual capacity as well as be well informed on how to win international scholarships/fellowships.
"You know true mentorship is what takes the mentor years to achieve should take the mentee few months to achieve. It is our hope that at the end of the training, the scholarship adventures of our mentees should be less stressful and faster than ours," he added.
