Pen Press Editor-in-Chief, UDUS NACJ President Shortlisted for ICIR Award

Abdulrasheed Hammad, a 400-level Law student at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, doubling as the Editor-in-Chief of the foremost press outfit on the campus, Pen Press UDUS, has been shortlisted for the ICIR Investigative Journalism award. The award is for his investigative story that exposed how online fraudsters feed on the naivety of victims in Nigeria. 


The International Centre for Investigative Reporting, ICIR, has shortlisted five outstanding campus journalists out of a pool of entrants across several Nigerian tertiary institutions. Three of the shortlisted candidates come from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. 


Alongside Hammad on the list are other UDUS campus journalists. They include Abiodun Jamiu, the President of the National Association of Campus Journalists, UDUS chapter, and Abdulwaheed Sofiullahi, the News Editor of the News Digest Press, UDUS.


According to the ICIR, three of the shortlisted journalists will qualify for the finale and be unveiled at the UCJ UI Awards Dinner and Handover Ceremony on the 23rd of October, 2021, at the Abdulsalami Abubakar Hall, University of Ibadan.


The first prize winner will take home a grand prize of N120,000 with an internship opportunity at the ICIR. The first runner-up and the second runner-up will receive a sum of N80,000 and N50, 000 respectively, with internship opportunities at the ICIR.


While speaking with the Editor in Chief of Pen Press, Abdulrasheed Hammad, he expressed his happiness over the surprising shortlists.


"I have applied for many opportunities which I wasn't shortlisted. So this one came to me in surprise, being shortlisted among all the entries, but I give thanks to Allah for making me among the finalists. 


"I also pray that I am privileged to be among the winners because out of the five shortlisted, there will be only three winners," he said.
