IT IS HIGH TIME WE HAVE A JUDICIARY ARM

By: Mustapha Mustapha T wolly

When it comes to justice, we are democrats, when it comes to exposing atrocities, I pray not to be sidelined.

Constitutionally, unapproved projects should not be carried out as provided for in the students' hand book, likewise holding a public office or offices simultaneously is unconstitutional. Breach of any of the constitutional provisions are followed with sanctions or in some cases, the defaulter may be pardoned. Can you imagine an official who has acted ultra vires punishing another alleged official? Do two wrongs make a right?

Legislators sleep and move around with constitution, wouldn't it sound ridiculous if a whole speaker is unaware of constitutional provisions? The former Dean of Student Affairs, prof A A Alieru, once said
" an adult cannot claim ignorance of the law; we all know what is right conventionally".

Our school's SRA is a replica of Saraki's Assembly, where senators found wanting for corruption, still deem it fit to call for impeachment of the executives. Just as the students' hand book supersedes all other associations' constitution, Nigeria Constitution is, of course, supreme to all Nigerians. We embarked on trips to National house of assembly but we desist from learning parliamentary procedures. Just as Dino Melaye and Bukola Saraki are alleged for crimes and sued to court for trials; whose responsibility is it to check our legislators?

As I have said earlier, we practice democracy, but our arms are incomplete. Judiciary is believed in Nigeria to be the last hope for the common man. Why shouldn't we have the judicial arm in UDUS, when we have a standard Faculty of Law making prospective lawyers for the society. The power should be balanced to avail transparency and efficiency. While the legislature has been checking the activities of the executives, whose responsibility is it to check the acts of the legislators and in case of disputes between the executives and legislators, whose duty is to resolve it?  These are the lacunas UDUS democracy is facing. We need the Students’ Judiciary for efficiency.
