THE PERIL OF HARD DRUGS' INTAKE IN DANFODIYO VARSITY

THE PERIL OF HARD DRUGS' INTAKE IN DANFODIYO VARSITY

Usman Mustapha, Reports.

Everyone certainly comes from somewhere, before they could meet in somewhere, which could be in a word connotes fate. Such fate is what took 'Usman' to the remote settlement called Dundaye which harbours a self-acclaimed most peaceful institute of learning all the way from his pious home of Daura on a four year programme in pursuant of first degree in Islamic Studies. His house particularly is the most pious of all living and non-living habitant of his homeland, which means Usman came from a well mannered and God fearing home. He entered school as a replica of his background. He possessed a personality that is a must envied for all; very humble, caring and funny.

One certain night on the course of his sojourn in Dundaye, he woke up to ease himself, on getting to the john, he didn't bother knocking, considering the fact that it is late in the night and little or nobody will be using it by that time of the night, but to his dismay, he met an average aged man with something of stick-like in his mouth with red light at the tip end of it and smoke dazzling out from his nostril. "Subuanallah" he screamed as he jammed the door before the man in the toilet and dash swiftly back to his bunk in hostel and gave up easing himself. His eyes was dazzling for the first time. He never thought he could encounter such thing in the most peaceful citadel of learning. He said as he narrated the incident to some of his senior colleagues in his room. They all chorused; "Welcome to UDUS, Mr. Jambito".

Just like most tertiary institution of learning in Nigeria, the federal University of Sokoto, popularly known as Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) is without one vices or the other, such as cultism, indecent dressing, rape incident among others. But UDUS has its vices to be minimal. Also, most Nigeria varsities are subjected to motto based on their performance and discipline. The likes of University of Ilorin is subjected to "better by far" Obafemi Awolowo University is alias; "for learning and culture. Ahmadu Bello University, located in the historically city of  Zaria has its motto to be "Naturally ahead", University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is subjected to "center of excellence" while Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto is nicknamed; "The most Peaceful University in Nigeria, 15 years ago". Most students of these Universities hold dear these nicknames and use it as a reference purpose in telling what makes their school better than others.

And as the case of UDUS, the alias; the most Peaceful University in Nigeria has been protected for past the past 1 and half decades and continue to be protected by all necessary means. But as the school is using every resources at its disposal in ensuring the peacefulness of the school stand, there are some keys that are digging the dog's gum and if care is not taking, the dog might no eat bone again.

Over the years as reported, several cases of smoking have been recorded in the University community, but the Management believes it to be villagers residing around the University vicinity. When I myself first heard of the story above, I could not bring myself to believe that this is happening in my dear varsity, the most peaceful University for that matter. So in order to false or credit the rumour I have been hearing. I dust myself up and go and see with my two eyes, what is happening.

On my journey of investigation on this story I came across seven 7 different hideouts of smokers in the University vicinity. Permit me to tell you that the following assumed smokers hideouts as soon as nightfall or about to fall in UDUS; Hostel Minimart (opposite Thanny photo shop), Male hostel bathrooms /toilets, Basket ball court (beside A block hostel), University Stadium, Bush (behind kwakosiyya female hostel), School Minimart and University Main Stadium. Those places mentioned above are serving corners to the smokers, all kind of drugs are abused to their satisfactions. They have turned themselves to Sango (Yorubas god of thunder, who vomits fire) making the hope of the University liable to disruption and building the foundation of bad image for the school as it is believed that smoking of Drugs of any kind childs cultist and some other evil acts seen in an environment.

It was gathered that, 60% of the smokers are villagers who resided in the school vicinity  and the remaining 40% are students of this varsity. This act indulged by both the villagers and students is against the University laws and order. Without much ado it is but a treat to the school orderliness, knowing fully well of the effect of smoking and smokers to any well meaning community.

In a recent accident in the school, two students were engaged in physical combat over a phone and before we could know it, blood has been gushing out from one of the student's abdomen. What happened? The other stabbed him and when enquired where has he got that courage, we were told the student that stabbed his fellow student was drug induced. If people were not close to the incident, different headings would have been the lead of the  story.

Also, Jibril Aminu hostel is mostly being used by some of these students in the night to continue with their misdeeds and unconstitutional act. These set of students used the hostel block, bathroom and toilet in perpetrating their act of smoking, thereby disrupting the whole area with smoke. By convention any act that disrupt one's living, should be properly look into. The act of smoking all sorts of weeds in University environment, especially in the hostel convenience places where students ease themselves are against humanity and well - being of individuals.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), second-hand smoke contains carcinogens, toxic metals and poisonous gases. While all of these substances obviously have adverse effects on human health, they also affect our environment as well. Second-hand smoke goes into our atmosphere and degrades air quality. The CDC also reports that a collection of experiments demonstrated that levels of respirable suspended particulates (RSPs) decreased by up to 96% in public spaces that banned smoking. Smoking among the young population as a whole is alarming. This should be addressed properly. More awareness should be created and proper measures should be taken to prevent smoking among young population.

Although, many forms of civic engagement and advocacy have been used in a bid to eradicate this practice in Fodiyo Varsity and other Nigerian Universities. But it became saddened of mind when students of higher institution are seeing addicted to drugs. So by Convention the University management still have much to do in curbing this act and protects our peaceful image.

In protecting this varsity image (motto), Justice needs to be prevailed. Adages say, a town not bounded with rules shall be restricted from punishment. Definitely a town bounded with rules shall be propounded with thorough punishment. These Students and villagers are against the University rules and must be sent off from the hostel or even school. Those places mentioned  should be powered by the security men to avoid future imbalance and irrelevancies that may prevail.
